HISTORY

Heir of the 8F squadron, becoming 28F on May 23th 1953. First, it was equipped with PB4Y-2S Privateers. They carried out many strike missions over Dien-Bien-Phu in late 1953 from Cat-Bi airfield. The 28F successively lost two aircraft over the area : the 28F.4 in April 1954 and the 28F.6 in May 1954. They were both shot by enemy's DCA. The 28F left battlefields and flew to Karouba (Tunisia). Eight additional Privateers were delivered by the USA for attrition. The unit took part in many operation (day and night) during Algeria War. It moved to NAS Lartigue (Algeria) and received few P2V-6 Neptunes in summer 1961. The squadron was disbanded at NAS Nîmes-Garons on March 15th 1963. On March 31st 2000, at NAS Hyères, the 3S has been replaced by the new 28F equipped with Nord-262E Frégates and EMB-121 Xingus.

Mediterranean fleet support, communications, MEDEVAC, SAR and transport.
