HISTORY |
Born on January 3rd 1955, it was the first attack squadron of the French Navy equipped with Aquilon Mk 20s, Mk 202s and 203s. In 1958, based at NAS Alger, it took part in the Algeria War and came back to Hyères in 1959. It moved to NAS Bizerte in 1961. It finally came back to Hyères, and was disbanded in April 1964. Re-created on May 1st 1964 at NAS Istres-Le-Tubé and equipped with Etendard IVPs. It moved to NAS Hyères the same year. In October 1967, it received additional aircraft (Etendard IVMs) from the 17F squadron. Those examples left the squadron in January 1969. On April 1st 1969, the squadron moved to NAS Landivisiau. In Autumn 1978, some Etendard IVMs (No153, 162 and 166) were upgraded into IVPs and integrated into the 16F for attrition. The 16F was the last still-flying unit on Etendard of the French Aéronavale. It was disbanded on July 28th 2000, its last three Etendard IVPs were scrapped ; being replaced by Upgraded Super-Etendard Standard 4s belonging to the 11F and 17F squadrons.

MISSIONS |
It carried out recce missions before every strikes made by Super-Etendards. It also provided reconnaissance missions for UN (Bosnia-Yugoslavia). During one of those missions, the Etendard IVP No153 flown by Pierre Clary was damaged by a Serb SAM.
