22S

Insignia of the 22S squadron.

 1/ HISTORY

The squadron was born on January 1st 1946 at Agadir (Morocco). It was disbanded at Cuers, on January 20th 1953, becoming 12S flying PBY-5A Catalinas and AAC-1 Toucans (JU-52). It was reborn on August 1st 1964 at NAS Lanvéoc-Poulmic, equipped with Alouette IIs and IIIs. In 1972, the E.S.H.E. (Ecole de Spécialisation sur Hélicoptères Embarqués/ Embarked Helicopter School) was created, which goal is, training pilots from the Gendarmerie (Police), the Armée de Terre (French Army), the Armée de l'Air (French Air Force) and the Aéronavale (French Naval Aviation) at sea and teaching them landing procedures aboard warships. It is now equipped with Alouette IIIs (SA-316B/ SA-316B VSV/ SA-319B).

 

2/ MISSIONS

Originally, its first role was to support Carrier Groups based at NS Brest. Nowadays, it provides support and transport missions aboard various warships such as AGORs, AORs...for the Atlantic Zone. Finally, it runs various training missions intended to FN's helicopter pilots.
