UTILITY AND TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT
HISTORY
The York was introduced in 1942 as a
military transport employing the wing, engines and tail unit of the
Lancaster bomber. Production of the York
continued until April 1948, when the 253rd and last machine
of this type was delivered. A number of war surplus York
military transports and post-war built civil freighters
remained in service with non-scheduled operators in various
parts of the world. The York is powered by four 1,620 hp
Rolls-Royce Merlin 24 engines.
The French Naval Aviation operated between 1954 and 1962 fiveYorks
allocated to the 25F
and 31S (2 examples) squadrons based at NAS
Lann-Bihoué. The
"MW169" was offered to the Général de Gaulle and
therefore used by the French Air Force within the GLAM
command.
